What this is
Air fresheners are a bet that you will get used to the smell before the smell gets to you. It is not a fix. Odor lives in something physical — spilled milk in the carpet padding, cigarette tar on the headliner, mildew in the cabin air filter, a dog bed of hair under the rear seat.
So the job is in that order: find the source, remove the source, then treat the air. Ozone applied to a car that still contains the source buys you about a week.
The ozone stage runs with the HVAC in recirculate, which is the part most places skip. If the smell got into the evaporator core and ductwork, cleaning the cabin alone will not touch it.

Does ozone really work on cigarette smoke?
On the airborne and absorbed portion, yes — very well. But smoke tar physically coats the headliner and glass, and no amount of ozone removes a coating. Heavy smoker cars need the surfaces cleaned first; that is why this service starts with source removal.
Is ozone safe for my car and for me?
For the car, yes, at the concentrations and durations we use. For people and pets, the vehicle has to be empty during treatment and aired out afterwards — so we run the cycle with the car closed up and nobody near it, and hand it back ventilated. It is the one part of a visit you are asked to stay away from.
Is it permanent?
If the source came out, yes. If the source was structural — smoke in the foam of every seat in a twenty-year-old car — we may get it to "faint" rather than "gone", and we will say so up front rather than take your money twice.
